Formerly known as Urbano Paninoteca

And I could never pronounce paninoteca so I’m glad the name has changed to Urbano Cafe. So much easier for me to say.

Not only has the name changed, but the location and concept has changed as well. I liked Urbano Paninoteca, I did. But I LOVE Urbano Cafe. It could possibly be my new favorite restaurant in Dallas. Last night I visited for the third time, and I definitely wasn’t disappointed.

First of all, it’s BYOB. How can you go wrong? Second of all, this pint-sized restaurant has a chalk board that lists the daily specials and a la carte meats and sides. There’s something about a chalkboard in a restaurant that immediately evokes coziness. And lastly, the food is incredible.

So far I’ve tried the following from the menu/blackboard:  Caprese S’mores  (Melted Buffalo Mozzarella between toasted Crostini with tomato and balsamic syrup), Prosciutto wrapped fig bruschetta with Texas honey comb, Red and Yellow tomato salad with blue cheese, extra virgin olive oil and Tom’s micro greens, 1410 Salad with seasonal greens with candied walnuts, sun-dried tomatoes, herbed goat cheese and orange vinaigrette, Tagliatelle Bolognese, Marinated pork tenderloin with smoked gouda polenta, Cambazola crusted petite tenderloin over roasted butternut hash with star anise demi, duck breast (from the meats on the blackboard), parmesan grits, okras & tomatoes, macaroni and cheese (I believe it was parmesan and gorgonzola).

I honestly couldn’t be forced to pick a favorite from the list.

These grainy iphone photos don’t do Urbano Cafe justice, so you’ll just have to go check it out yourself.

This is basically the restaurant in it's entirety. It's empty because I inevitably always end up eating dinner at 10pm.

The beloved blackboard.

BYOB. The best part of Urbano Cafe (besides the food, of course).

Urbano Cafe is located at Fitzhugh and Bryan Street – right next door to Jimmy’s Food Store. They take reservations, and you definitely need them if you go on a weekend. But if you decide to arrive unannounced they’ll happily uncork your wine so you can enjoy your short wait outside.

Better than kidney stones

I adore finding interesting and unique gifts for the holidays.

I start my search months before – pouring over gift suggestions in every magazine, scouring etsy for the perfect homemade item, and only visiting the mall as a last resort (or gifts for uncool cousins).

This year, I discovered whiskey stones on thinkgeek.com.

Whiskey Stones from ThinkGeek.com

Whiskey Stones from ThinkGeek.com

They’re basically stones that act as ice cubes that never melt and can be re-frozen for the rest of your life. So your lucky grandchildren can inherit them.

I’m not sure why the example is whiskey (not that I’m opposed to it), but I assume you could throw the stones in any delicious concoction.

Happy gifting.

Holiday Cookie Exchange

cs_DSC_0059Friday night I went to my dear friend Lesley’s Holiday Cookie Exchange party. ~What a wonderful way to kick off the holidays! Everyone brought a batch of their favorite homemade holiday cookies, along with copies of the recipe to pass along to everyone. We all walked away with a sugar rush, and bags full of treats to sample.

Homemade Holiday Oreos

cs_DSC_0013

I’m going to a Christmas cookie swap party on Friday and thought this would be the perfect holiday treat. I adapted these home made oreos from a recipe found  on my favorite go-to foodie blog- ~Smitten Kitchen. My favorite part about the Oreo cookie is the cream! So I made extra icing and double stuffed these cookies. Then for a festive splash of color I just rolled them through some red sugar sprinkles.

Hot Potato in Hot Maui

So yesterday I returned from beautiful, 80 degree Maui. Not a bad way to spend seven days in December.

And while I was there I ate. A lot.

This was my first trip to Maui, and I was honestly impressed with the meals we had there. I ate everything from butter poached lobster to pork sandwiches from a roadside stands to the best shaved ice in North America (no kidding – check it out here).

I’ll do my best to recap the highlights.

Sansei

Really great sushi. Atmosphere is typical American sushi restaurant, but the sashimi and rolls were fresh and unique. The only roll we weren’t super crazy about what the dragon roll – the unagi pieces were underwhelming. Unfortunately, we ate at 6pm with all the elderly, but if you eat after 10pm the sushi is half-price and there is karaoke to be heard. Maybe next time!

Kimos

We stopped here for lunch after our surfing lessons in Lahaina. Fish tacos were solid, but the view was even better. They had a great patio overlooking the water with a decent view of Lanai.

Sunchips and Mike & Ikes

I’m not kidding – this was our dinner one night. We were just too tired from the surf & sun to head out. That being said, Sun Chips are my favorite chips (Salsa flavored) and Mike & Ikes are probably my top candy choice. I have to sneak them in to the AMC at Northpark as they have something against Mike & Ikes. They’re obviously biased in favor of Sour Patch Kids.

The Gazebo

So the significant other and I are huge breakfast eaters. In Dallas, we brunch on both Saturday and Sunday at Parigi or Kozy Kitchen. Sometimes we’ll throw Breadwinners into the mix.

So on our last day in Kaanapali, we decided to venture out for a big breakfast. And we definitely weren’t disappointed with the bigness of food at The Gazebo in Napilli. It’s a small, out of the way restaurant located poolside at the Napilli Shores Condos. We were a little hesitant when we first arrived. It’s small and shabby looking, but the line out the door assured us it was good. The line moved quickly, and we soon found ourselves inside a literal gazebo to eat our favorite meal of the day. The big winner of the meal was the banana macadamia nut pancakes with fresh whipped cream and maple syrup. I’m not even sure it counts as breakfast as the calorie count probably beats out any dessert.

Duo

This was where we dined our first night at the Four Seasons in Maui. It’s your typical steak and seafood restaurant with a great view of Wailea Bay. There’s some dissension between the SO and myself about the caliber of food at DUO. His filet, awesome. My filet, absurdly salty. However, the sides were unique and delicious (blue-cheese creamed spinach and truffled mac and cheese), so I would return to DUO to eat the spinach alone.

Sushi from the Lobby Lounge at Four Seasons Wailea

Honestly, this was probably the best sushi we had during our trip. The pieces were large and fresh, and we devoured our sushi plate within minutes. Always a good sign. We dined on this sushi and drank champagne in the lobby bar before our dinner on the last night at Ferraros. Because obviously sushi is a great appetizer before Italian food…

Ferraros

This was my favorite meal in Maui – and it was completely unexpected. Italian in Maui? seriously? But it was fabulous. We sat at a table at the edge of the restaurant overlooking Wailea Beach. We started with their bread served with garlic spread and babaganoush – what a treat. Garlicky and smooth. We ordered beef carpaccio and the caprese salad to start – both were outstanding. The mozzarella needed a tad bit of salt, but otherwise it was creamy and fresh – definitely not just chopped off of a frozen mozzarella ball

And our main courses were both superb. I had the butter-poached lobster served out of the shell on top of ricotta gnocchi. It’s one of those dishes you wish would last forever. Lobster was cooked to perfection and the gnocchi definitely held it’s own. My significant other ordered the braised veal pappardelle – another big winner. How can you go wrong with homemade pappardelle? You can’t. obviously.

Dessert fell a little flat. Tiramasu was okay, but not exactly memorable.

Oh, and our two bottles of wine were delicious.

Makena Grill

This was our final meal in Maui (well, except for the airport nachos that I’m not going to count for obvious reasons). I LOVED this meal, and the whole experience. We spent our morning at the big beach in Makena, and we were starving by noon. So we hopped in our sweet rented red Pontiac Vibe to head half a mile down the road to the Makena Grill – a roadside stand that serves fresh grilled meats, fish tacos, hot dogs and much more. I had the pork sandwich and Nathan had the fish taco – both hot off the grill. After lunch we indulged in a fire-roasted banana…it was amazing as it sounds. It’s basically a bananas foster still in the banana peel. It makes me wish I had a roadside grill in Maui so I could recreate the moment for myself every day.

So that’s the end of my culinary adventure in Maui. Along with eating we also surfed, hiked on the volcano, took a side trip to Lanai and drank plenty of Mai Tais and Lava Flows – possibly my new favorite drink.

Aloha,

Sarah

Gourmet Regrets...

So this is what has become of my beloved Gourmet magazine- a crappy black and white postcard with a bad printing job on cheap stock paper.

gourmet cardCouldn’t they have at least gone out with a kick-ass recipe, or a heartfelt letter from Ruth? I’ll miss her dearly. It’s been two months now, and I’m still trying to get over the shock of this loss of my monthly bible of all things culinary. Gourmet art director, Kevin DeMaria posted some pictures of the Last Days of Gourmet on his blog. It’s so sad to see all those boxes piled high. PS- who gets to walk away with the Gourmet kitchen tools? Because I know of one or two hot potatoes who would love a piece from that kitchen! Thanks for sharing Kevin ~We are all mourning this loss.

I keep thinking ~surely Gourmet will bounce back soon, and this is all just a publicity stunt. Well until then I’ll be waiting, with hungry eyes.

Foie Gras & Pop Rocks?

I wasn’t quiet sure what to think about this combination when it was placed in front of me at Graham Elliot last night. What is essentially a duck liver mousse, garnished with nostalgic popping candy blew my mind! The buttery foie gras instantly melts as soon as it hits your tongue, and then the surprising pop, pop, crack mingles in. The flavors were surprisingly light, but then the velvety richness punches you in the face with the burst of another pop rock, one after another until you look down and  there is nothing left except the sad remnants of your lollipop stick.

Graham Elliott is quite playful with the food at his restaurant, and I would expect nothing less from this celebrity chef. I enjoyed root beer bbq pork belly, and a deconstructed orange dreamsicle for dessert. All was utterly delicious, but nothing was quite as memorable as these pops. Stephen never disappoints when taking us out in Chicago, and I think I may have just found a new eclectic favorite.

Joe's Prime Steak & Stone Crab

Joe’s Stone Crab has been a favorite of mine for many years now. What started out as my favorite go-to restaurant for client dinners, has now become the one of the first places I crave as soon as I land in O’Hare.

This restaurant costs a pretty penny, but the food is worth it, and the ambiance is exceptional. However if you’re not looking to entertain clients, and you need to save money on a great meal ~you can still have your steak, crab, and cake… and eat it too.

I’ll let you in on a little secret ~It’s still possible to eat at this restaurant without a reservation, and still walk away without needing to dip in to your 401K

Joe’s does half orders, and add ons of many of the favorites on their menu. My favorite way to share a meal is to sit at the bar, split a steak, add on a side of the king crab and split a half slice of pie to finish. There are quite a few tables in the bar area and it’s finders keepers, you’ve got to be quick. You can order from the full menu here as well though. And the friendly folks at Joe’s will It’s only 12.99 to add 3 lusciously juicy king crab legs (which are in season right now by the way) to any entree. Joe’s does half orders of their famous pies also! It’s so easy to stuff yourself on the decedent steak and crab, but friends ~save room for dessert! Their standard pie slices are massive, so a half slice is actually more appropriate anyway, and for a mere $3 for half a slice in most cases, you just can’t pass that up. I recommend the Havana Dream Pie, Joe’s rendition of a tres leches cake. It’s my absolute favorite!

Here are a few of the iphone captures from our latest visit.

Joe’s Grilled Tomatoestomatoes

My favorite side dish a Joe’s are the grilled tomatoes. Though I don’t know why they are called grilled, the recipe doesn’t call for grilling over an open flame. It’s quite simple actually ~just tomatoes, spinach, and good ol’ american cheese broiled in the oven for a few minutes till all is melted in to deliciousness. I’ll photograph the steps and post it soon when I get back in town next week.

Windy City Bites

I know we are Dallas based foodies, but Chicago has become like a second home for me because I get to travel here quite a lot for work. This week I’ll be blogging from the Windy City, and I can’t wait to share my foodie finds with you.

This week I’m in town for another photo shoot with the famed food photographer and fellow foodie- Stephen Hamilton. I know he has a fabulous new restaurant to introduce me to, and I can’t wait to see what he has in store. In the mean time here are a few of Stephen’s delicious photos to whet your appetite ~some of which were art directed by yours truly.
